Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT)

What is Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty?

Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a laser procedure performed to treat or prevent open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension (high eye pressure inside the eye).

In these conditions, fluid (called aqueous humour) does not drain properly through the eye’s natural drainage system, leading to raised eye pressure that can damage the optic nerve.

SLT uses a gentle laser to target specific cells in the trabecular meshwork. This helps to improve fluid drainage and lower eye pressure.

The effect of SLT may take several weeks to reach its full benefit, and the pressure-lowering effect can last for several years

What happens on the day of your treatment?

• First, you will meet with one of the clinical team who will test your vision and administer eye drops to numb your eye.

• You will sit at a the laser machine similar to a regular eye exam. A special contact lens is used to help focus the laser.

• Your eye specialist then performs the laser procedure, which only takes around 5-10 minute per eye and is generally painless. You may see bright flashes of light.

• Mild discomfort, irritation, or a gritty sensation.

• Sensitivity to light for a day or two.

• A mild headache or eye ache for a few hours as your eye adjusts.

• Slight redness or feeling of pressure in the treated eye.

Your eye specialist may prescribe anti-inflammatory eye drops to reduce swelling and irritation.
