Avastin (Bevacizumab) Eye Treatment

What is Avastin?

Avastin (Bevacizumab) is a medication used to treat eye conditions that can cause vision loss, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, and retinal vein occlusion.

It works by reducing abnormal blood vessel growth and fluid leakage in the retina, helping to stabilise or improve vision.

What Happens During Treatment?

On the day of treatment, your vision will be checked and anaesthetic drops applied for comfort. The eye and surrounding area will be cleaned to maintain sterility. Avastin is then administered as a small injection into the gel inside the eye (vitreous cavity). The procedure is quick, usually only a few minutes, and is generally well tolerated.

What to Expect After Treatment?

After your injection, it is normal to experience mild, temporary effects as your eye recovers.

You may notice:

  • Slight discomfort or a gritty sensation

  • Mild redness on the white of the eye

  • Small floaters or bubbles in your vision

  • Mild watering or irritation

  • Slight blurring of vision

These symptoms usually improve within 24–48 hours.

Most patients can return to normal daily activities the next day.

Post-Treatment Care:

  • Do not rub or press on your eye for 24 hours

  • Avoid swimming or using a spa for 48 hours

  • Do not drive until the following day

  • Use any prescribed eye drops as directed

  • Contact your eye specialist immediately if you experience severe pain, worsening redness or swelling, sudden vision changes, or discharge from the eye.

Risks of Treatment
