The Sisters of Mercy were founded in Ireland in 1831 by Catherine McAuley, with a mission to serve through education and healthcare. Their work quickly spread around the world.

In 1897, at the invitation of Bishop Michael Verdon, the Sisters arrived in Dunedin. They began visiting the sick and poor, and teaching in parish schools. By 1900, they had established communities across New Zealand, focused on caring for children, the sick, and those in need.

Recognising a need for a second hospital in Dunedin, the Sisters opened the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in 1936. Their dedication laid the foundation for what is now Mercy Hospital.

For over 85 years, Mercy Hospital has served the people of Otago and Southland with compassionate, high-quality care. Today, the Sisters of Mercy remain closely involved, continuing Catherine McAuley’s legacy through ongoing support and charitable outreach.
